In Remembrance of my late mother

Psalm 23:6

It was 4 years exactly today when mother passed away. she was murdered while she was living in the Ivory Coast as the country was going through it's civil war. Northerners and Southerners fighting one another for control of the country.

Below is a piece of eulogy I wrote during her funeral.

"
In remembrance - Dec. 13, 2002

Writing this piece is very difficult but I will try...

I still remember my family back in my village, we had small crocodiles in a pond that dad built when he first started working in Africa. During spring time in Taiwan, I went out with my mother harvesting rice in our own rice paddies. As for me, I was trying to catch frogs... Afterward, we had lunch with the other harvesters. It was delicious ‘cause mom prepare some of that.

Mother also sowed umbrellas for factories. She would also tailor clothes for us, stitch, wash our clothes and when diner time comes – my family would gather for a good meal - sweet potatoes, chicken drumsticks and veggie dishes - what a homey motherly meal. We had a wonderful time.

One day, mother came back with some news that the whole family was immigrating to the Ivory Coast – my little brothers and I were all excited to travel except we didn’t know where the Ivory Coast is – my 1st grade teacher and my grand mother were devastated! However, mother took up the challenge to lead the family to the Ivory Coast and unite with my dad who is already there.

Life finally started for mother – not knowing much French – she nursed and comforted us – and worked in building a small home business. First by working as a seamstress at home tailoring ladies clothes. She was quite creative and could make even school bags for us to use. However, later on she started importing clothes from Taiwan – imported other wares from elsewhere. She was just starting in her real life – in the next 20+ years she would build a business – but most importantly a home for us to shelter from the heat of the sun, rain storms, sand storms from the Sahara desert.

She was the mother of many – tenderly to many.
Her sweet voice enchanted a great many from all walks of life.
Mother tends the family with an unwavering care.

A couple years ago, she accepted the Lord as her Savior and she would regularly attend her local church. Actually, it was dad who brought us to church – she enjoyed making new friends – she was elated to go to Church almost every Sunday – enjoy to sing Christian songs.

During the past 3 months of the Ivory Coast crisis, I don't know how she could ever be so strong and courageous in facing the crisis. But she always says that “even though she is alone, she is never lonely because she has the Lord – Jesus Christ in her heart”.

In short let me summarize in this poem to: My beloved mother.

Magnificent,
Young,
Beautiful was her heart,
Ever forevermore

Lovely, like a rose,
Opening up to the sunshine,
Valiantly facing the day’s storm.
Ever forevermore.

Mother - Instilled in me a confidence that will outlast.
O
Mother of my life’s early battles,
You were always near us shouldering our lonely moments.
And maker of endless laughter and memories,

Sings with magical rhythm and melodies,
Filled our thousand days and nights...
Everlasting would I always keep you in my heart.

Mother knows her Maker as a devout lady,
Her earthling days did no go in vain.
In heaven we will meet her Maker and her again.

Loving You Forever

I Love you”.
